CroRace Stage 4 : Sam Maisonobe again on top

This stage promised plenty of suspense and uncertainty, with a 10km climb averaging 8 per cent to tackle, the summit of which was situated 50km from the finish. Following preparatory work by Lorenzo De Longhi, Eduardo Zamperini and Valentin Ferron, a group of 30 riders eventually reached the summit, including Clément, Sam and Dylan. On the descent, a quartet formed, closing in on the morning’s breakaway. With a 1-minute gap to make up, the team joined the chase, with a superb Clément Izquierdo helping to reduce the gap to 30 seconds with less than 10 km to go. It was at this point that Sam decided to set off alone in pursuit of them. Putting in a superb performance, he managed to close the gap to 500 metres from the line by attempting to counter-attack straight away. He eventually finished 5th but gained 15 seconds in the general classification. Still 4th this evening, he is now just 19 seconds behind the leader’s jersey with two stages to go.

"Le départ de l'étape a été très rapide avec de nombreuses tentatives, nous avons toujours été présents avec des coureurs. C'est finalement un petit groupe qui est sorti après 80km, contrôlé par l'équipe du leader. Dans le col le plus difficile de la journée, nos 3 coureurs placés au général ont basculé avec le bon groupe. Mais nous étions très observés par les autres et on n'a pas pu partir avec le quatuor qui s'est isolé dans la descente. Nous avons décidé dans le final de rouler avec clément pour réduire l'écart, il a été encore très costaud, tout comme Sam qui a encore fait un numéro. Il a réussi l'exploit de rentrer seul et a même tenté de les surprendre mais il était un peu juste ce qui est normal. Il reprend du temps au général mais surtout a montré encore une forme étincelante. Vivement demain."
