On a demanding course featuring two ascents of Monte Serra, Benjamin Thomas and Jamie Meehan were in the mix in the finale of the Giro della Toscana. The two Cofidis riders battled in the chasing group, giving everything to bridge across to the leaders.
Five riders quickly formed the breakaway during the 184 km Giro della Toscana. As the race approached the second ascent of Monte Serra (8.4 km at 7.1%), the peloton came back together before the race split apart on the steepest gradients.
Around ten riders crested the climb at the front. Just behind, Benjamin Thomas and Jamie Meehan found themselves in the chasing group. The two Cofidis riders gave everything in the final kilometres to try to bridge the gap, but were unable to make the junction.
At the finish in Pontedera, Benjamin Thomas took 14th place, just 15 seconds behind the winner.

“We came very close to a big result with Benjamin Thomas, who rode a great race. It was a very difficult race, with two ascents of Monte Serra and a course that suited the climbers. Around ten riders went clear at the top. Jamie Meehan was just a little short of making it across with them, while Benjamin wasn’t far behind. They both found themselves in the chasing group and tried to bridge across in the finale, but unfortunately we couldn’t close the gap. It’s a shame because Benjamin was really strong and we missed out on a big result. There was a great opportunity today, but unfortunately we weren’t able to take it.”
