Stage 7 of La Vuelta took the peloton from Vall d’Alba to Aramón Valdelinares over 150 km. A mountain stage featuring the first summit finish of this edition, on the roads of Aragón.
The route featured the second-category San Rafael climb before the final ascent to Valdelinares. After several breakaway attempts at the start of the stage, a group of five riders eventually managed to get clear. Behind them, Sergio Samitier and Bryan Coquard joined a chasing group of around fifteen riders. Bryan was caught by the peloton with 37 km to go, while Sergio continued his effort. Still in the chasing group with 7 km remaining, the Spanish climber put in a strong ride on his training roads and eventually finished 15th.

“Today was a mountain stage with a finish in Valdelinares. The goal was to get into the breakaway. We managed to get Sergio Samitier and Bryan Coquard into a chasing group of around fifteen riders, behind the five riders in the breakaway. The victory was eventually decided among the riders at the front. Sergio finished in the second group, 1’30 behind the leaders. He rode a strong stage. Tomorrow’s stage will most likely come down to a sprint.”
