The fourth stage of La Vuelta took place this Tuesday around Andorra la Vella. On a short 104-kilometre course featuring four categorised climbs, the favourites battled it out for the victory.
The stage got off to a fast start, with Sergio Samitier trying to get up the road. A breakaway of eleven riders eventually formed, but the peloton never gave them much of an advantage.
In the Andorran climbs, the race gradually began to split. Emanuel Buchmann and Sylvain Moniquet found themselves in a second group, while the favourites battled for the stage victory.
Tadej Pogacar attacked with around 50 kilometres to go and went on to take a solo victory in Andorra la Vella. Emanuel Buchmann finished 35th.

“We knew from the start that the favourites, and Tadej Pogacar in particular, would battle for the victory on a stage like this. On our side, we tried to do everything we could to stay with the first group. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to do that, and Emanuel Buchmann and Sylvain Moniquet found themselves in the second group.
Now we have to try to fight for a victory by getting into the breakaways. Tomorrow’s stage could end in a sprint, with the sprinters’ teams likely to control the race. We’ll see how Bryan Coquard has recovered from his crash, and I hope he’ll be able to play his card.”
