Following yesterday’s opening stage, which was tailored for sprinters, it was the climbers’ turn to take centre stage on the route to Lagnieu, featuring two ascents of the Col de Portes, the last of which came 25km from the finish. Jamie Meehan, who was among the frontrunners on the climb, finished 6th in a group 55 seconds behind the winner, Beloki.
Last year, he made a name for himself whilst still just a trainee, and this year Jamie Meehan continues to impress. On a stage featuring two ascents of the Col de Portes, he stood out by being among the leaders at the summit, just over 25km from the finish. But in the final stretch, Beloki broke away to race to victory. Jamie finished 6th, less than a minute behind, and remains in contention for a strong performance ahead of the final stage to Lelex Mont Jura, where he took 3rd place last year.
