Another weekend of competition and another impressive haul of medals. The northern team put in an impressive performance in Italy, securing three titles and seven medals. Never before has the Cofidis team been so successful at a European Championship. Here’s why.
The European Championship at a glance
- Louis Hubert, European time trial and road race champion
- Arthur Bauchet, European time trial champion, silver medallist in the road race
- Katell Alençon, silver medallist in the road race, bronze medallist in the time trial
- Eliott Pierre, silver medallist in the time trial
Following the World Cup rounds and the French Championships, the para-cycling team headed to Maniago in north-eastern Italy for the European Championships. It was another opportunity to test themselves against the competition and build on a year that has been particularly rich in titles and medals. However, the team had to cope with the injury of one of its key riders, Gatien Le Rousseau, who is still recovering.
His teammates certainly did not disappoint, and it all began on Thursday following the 9.2 km time trial. All four Cofidis riders made it onto the podium. Special mention goes to Louis Hubert and Arthur Bauchet, who won gold. Meanwhile, Eliott Pierre took second place and Katell Alençon third.
Louis Hubert, what a double!
After a well-deserved rest day on Saturday, everyone was back in action on Sunday for the road race. Louis Hubert continued his winning streak by taking the win again, even though he had to fight hard right to the end.
“He was in the breakaway from the second lap (out of nine),”said Valérie Alexandre, the team manager.
“He played his cards right against the world champion by winning the sprint.”
For Katell Alençon and Arthur Bauchet, the race also came down to a sprint finish. Although they were in contention, the two Cofidis riders were unable to take the win and had to settle for silver. Eliott Pierre finished 10th, having been left behind after failing to join the breakaway that went all the way to the finish.
