The Italian put in a brilliant performance on this first stage of the CIC Tour des Pyrénées, winning in a sprint finish. This is the third victory of her career and the second for the Cofidis team this season. And tomorrow, it’s the turn of the team’s climbers!

There were plenty of reasons to celebrate this Friday ahead of the first stage. For a start, there’s the certainty of a very exciting programme, with a thrilling weekend of racing in one of the season’s most popular stage races. As for Cofidis, it was a pleasure to see Victoire Berteau return to competition after a long absence due to injury. And then there was the drama of this stage between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Mourenx.

After a long breakaway, the peloton caught up for the long-awaited sprint finish. Right at the front, Martina Alzini showed her cunning by slipping in among the favourites. Having mastered the final bend, Martina launched her sprint and won without faltering. This is the third victory of her career; she hadn’t won since her success at the Tour de Normandie in 2023. Above all, the sprinter highlights the great vitality of the women’s team, which had already triumphed in April with Amalie Dideriksen (at the Région Pays de la Loire Tour).

The reaction

Martina Alzini:

“It’s been a long time since I last won, so naturally, it feels fantastic! I had the full confidence of the team, which allowed me to approach the stage without any pressure. We had also studied the stage and the finale thoroughly with all the staff. The conditions were ideal, with very little wind. I tried to make my move at exactly the right moment, and it paid off! This weekend, I’ll do everything I can to keep hold of the green jersey, and I know the team still has plenty of cards to play!”
