It was the second stage of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and once again the Cofidis team was on the attack. Benjamin Thomas was part of the decisive breakaway and finished sixth in Le Puy-en-Velay.

Once again, Team Cofidis aimed for the breakaway in this Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Already on the attack the day before, Benjamin Thomas did it again today. While yesterday he missed out on the right breakaway, that wasn’t the case on the way to Le Puy-en-Velay. Although our Olympic champion did everything right, he fell just short of raising his arms in victory at the finish. He finished 6th.

The reaction

Bingen Fernandez, sports director:
“We played our hand today by getting into the breakaway to try for the win. Benjamin Thomas went out with six guys, then others caught up from behind, forming a solid little breakaway of ten riders. We were right there in the final kilometers, but Benjamin Thomas was just a bit short on strength; still, he had a solid little stage. We were in contention for the win right up to the finish, but in the end, Uno-X Mobility won. And we secured a solid finish.”
