The breakaway held off the peloton on this second stage of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque. Despite crashing with 400 metres to go, Bryan Coquard escaped without serious injury and keeps his second place in the general classification.
After a very fast start from Glisy, five riders quickly broke away from the peloton and built a gap. With 20 km to go, the advantage between the breakaway and the peloton stood at 1’30. A battle then began as the peloton started to close the gap. With 5 km remaining, there were still 50 seconds to make up. The outcome remained uncertain. In the end, the breakaway held on until the finish. Bryan Coquard, caught in a crash with 400 metres to go, was unable to contest the sprint, fortunately without serious consequences.
Reaction from sports director Sébastien Hinault:
“We didn’t get a result with Bryan Coquard after he crashed in the final 400 metres. Fortunately, it’s nothing serious. The breakaway made it to the finish today. We decided not to chase because we felt it was up to Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe to control the race with the leader’s jersey. I think it was the right option, because the finish didn’t really suit Bryan, it was too flat for him. Bryan is still second overall. Tomorrow is a cobbled stage and it should already create the first gaps in the general classification.”
