Between the GP Samyn and Nokere Koerse, our classic riders gathered in Denia to prepare for their upcoming races. Our performance manager, Mattia Michelusi, explains the benefits of this specialised training camp.
On Tuesday 3 March, the day the jersey was unveiled, the riders put in a superb performance at the GP Samyn. It was a hard-fought race in which they gave it their all to claim victory, with Jenthe Biermans finishing 4th. Three days earlier, at Het Nieuwsblad, Alexis Renard spent the day at the front of the pack and secured an impressive top-10 finish.
They are clearly in good form, which has been further honed over the past ten days in Denia, Spain, at the Sella Golf Marriott. Stan Aniolkowski, Jenthe Biermans, Camille Charret, Hugo Page, Alexis Renard, Dylan Teuns, Ludovic Robeet, Sylvain Moniquet and Jan Maas completed a series of training sessions on varied courses, in an environment conducive to hard work and concentration. This training camp not only helps to refine physical fitness but also strengthens bonds within the group, which will then come together for the major spring classics.
As Mattia Michelusi, head of the performance unit, explains, this camp offers several benefits for the riders and the team:
“This camp in Spain offers many benefits for the riders and the team:
From a physiological perspective, the varied routes in Spain allow us to organise high-quality training sessions that are well-suited to preparing for the classics. We can focus specifically on different areas. The weather is also favourable, even though we’ve had quite a bit of rain this year.
From a monitoring perspective: the fact that the coaches, mechanics and mental health coaches are there every day allows us to keep an eye on the riders and their training, adjust programmes where necessary, and discuss with each rider their needs, difficulties, etc. Direct contact with the riders is essential.
From a team perspective: building team spirit among the riders, optimising muscle memory and cohesion. These riders will then compete in the Flemish classics; it is important that they can train together beforehand, as this will help them during the races.”
Beyond the physical training, this training camp also ensures comprehensive support for the riders thanks to the daily presence of the staff. Coaches, mechanics, a nutritionist and a mental coach support the athletes on a daily basis to optimise each session and adapt the programmes according to how each rider feels and their individual needs.
This training camp takes place at a strategic point in the season, between two blocks of competitions. At the end of this training period, the riders will enjoy a short recovery phase to ensure they are in the best possible condition for the first major spring classics.
